Some stories about Güemes

FIESTA DE SAN JUAN
It is an ancestral pagan celebration which coincides with the arrival of the summer solstice in Europe and the winter solstice in our hemisphere. It consists in gathering every 24th June round a bonfire promising to finish one stage to begin a new one. It has been organized by La Luna Theatre for more than two decades. MYTHS & LEGENDS
La Pelada de la Cañada: she is the most popular of all of the characters of thisneighborhood. She first appeared towards the end of the XIX century. According to what people said, “La Pelada” was a short woman, dressed in mourning, who wore a veil covering her head and face. If there was some light on, she would take off her veil quickly, letting her face uncovered, which people say was cadaverous, and showing her head, which was completely shaved. This woman would come out of the dark unexpectedly and, while weeping, would escort any nightly passers-by who dared to come through this place.
The Gallows: in the XIX century, death penalty was used as a way of punishment in our city. Theoffenders were sentenced to death by means of the gallows, which was placed in the corner of San Juan Boulevard and La Cañada. Legend has it that neighbors avoided going through this place for fear of coming across lost souls.
TRADITIONAL GÜEMES
It is said that Carlos Gardel did not deprive himself of enjoying the “arrabalera” nightlife in Güemes. Not hard to believe; this neighborhood, with the entire legacy behind, is the place where authentic tango lives.
