To the southeast of downtown, is one of the most picturesque neighborhoods of the city. Güemes hides an “arrabalero” and enigmatic past, which mingles with a present filled with development and economic growth of the last years.
The neighborhood extends itself between the two banks of the most well-known streams in Córdoba: La Cañada. It was named after the carved stones used to make its walls in the 40s in order to channel the stream, after a series of overflows and floods. This stream originates in “La Lagunilla” and drains into the Suquía river.
Its Origins
The initial urban occupation of the neighborhood is limited to the valley of “La Cañada” and to the spontaneous settlements of shacks, which since 1815 expanded themselves on the west end of the stream, and which were known as “El Abrojal”. To the east side of the stream, meanwhile, “Pueblo Nuevo” was beginning to exist. This way, two clear and distinct entities were to be formed: “Pueblo Nuevo”, a more visible area which managed to appear in cartographic documents, and “El Abrojal”, more marginal and inhabited by workmen and former slaves which managed to rebuild itself during the historical chronicle.
Not until 1925 was it possible for the two settlements to interconnect and articulate to each other, giving the neighborhood a sense of unity. With a marginal past and being considered the first Cordobese neighborhood designed outside downtown, Güemes is nowadays a place not to miss in Córdoba because it combines in its streets the charm and mistery of the past with the lights of modernity.
